Playing for Change has traveled the globe in an attempt to unite the continents through the power of music.  Initially a movement based in video and audio recordings, PFC is bringing several musicians together for a touring project dubbed the Playing for Change band.  The tour will travel across the United States in an effort to further expand the PFC word of peace through music.

ATF is fortunate enough to support this cause and give our readers a chance to see the the Playing for Change band at their stop in St. Paul at The O’Shaughnessy (Friday November 6).  Two contestants will each win a pair of tickets to the show and 1 deluxe edition of the Playing for Change CD Songs Around the World and one other lucky person will snag a copy of the deluxe edition CD.  Send an email to contests[at]above-thefold.com with “PFC Giveaway” in the subject, and in the body please include your full name, email address, and let us know how you heard about the contest.  The winner will be notified via email on Wednesday (November 4).  Check out episode 15 and keep an eye on ATF for plenty of great coverage, on Playing for Change, in the days to come.

Bigger than ever, Brother Ali’s distinctive tone and powerful delivery commands the attention of listeners. The Midwest hip-hop hero is running on freight train like momentum after his newest release US, and so far it seems he has no sign of stopping.  Check out Brother Ali live in Paris for GrandCrew.com

ATF Video: Mike Posner…at the Speed of Sound [inPhotos]

by Justin Andert on October 27, 2009

At the end of the Summer when I traveled home to Michigan, I had the privilege of spending an afternoon with the busiest 21-year-old in the world. Mike Posner is no stranger to this site or to just about any other influential web-site or publication around the country. His brand of pop music has been so fresh that it almost makes your eyes water upon first taste. The singer spends the majority of his weekdays on the campus of Duke University, but come  weekends he is on airplanes taking him to stages and studio spaces across the country. Take a quick glimpse at a day with Mike Posner; as seen through the eyes of my camera and heard through the sounds of Posner’s unreleased song Speed of Sound (Prod. by Block Beattaz) about the launching of the singer’s career and what it means for his daily life.

Posner’s second mixtape One Foot Out the Door will be released on Thursday [10.29] for free on iTunes. Be sure to download it, as it will be full of future classics.

Album Review: The Stolen Sweets

by Santos Ramos on October 27, 2009

stolen-sweets-album-cover1Portland, OR– The last band I heard sing about food was the Wiggles, but it’s much better when The Stolen Sweets do it. If this Portland sextet can make food sound so cool…just imagine, right? Sleepytime in Chinatown is an unusual gem. The songs (about half of which are originals) bounce about in retro-snazzy, swing-jazz fashion, and are stylistically reminiscent of the1930s’ Boswell Sisters–an influence that they proudly embrace. Stellar three-part vocal harmonies, smooth melodies, and rhythmic bass and guitar parts are the main components of the band’s sound, but, as is the case with most music, you just have to hear. Go! Hear it! You can stream clips and purchase the album HERE.
