As the Republican National Convention got underway in downtown St. Paul yesterday, an estimated 10,000 residents piled into Harriet Island for an all-day festival sponsored by the SEIU in support of labor unions. The line-up for the festival was a who’s who in politically conscious music with the likes of Mos Def, Tom Morello (Rage Against the Machine), Atmosphere, Billy Bragg, Steve Earle, and recently reunited The Pharcyde.
The concerned fans stuck out the sweltering 90 + degree heat to make sure their voices were heard.
Atmosphere’s Slug got the 10,000 plus fans to roar when he asked the crowd if they could make the Republicans, who were filing into the Xcel Center at the time, hear them from across the river.

The local hip hop legends put on a by the numbers set that while didn’t stray from their recorded material on many levels still kept the energy high even as the sun beat down.
The vibe of the set came largely from newer Atmosphere material, but the crowd certainly had their way when the group pulled out an older classic God Loves Ugly.
Baltimore’s Dave Nada, who we saw the night before, spun a set between Atmosphere and Mos Def’s stage time.
