LIVE: Natalie Portman’s Shaved Head/CSS/The Go!Team/Matt&Kim//First Avenue – Minneapolis, MN [7/30/08]

Natalie Portman’s Shaved Head

Last night, Minneapolis saw one of the fullest, high quality line-ups you will find on a tour through the Midwest. Natalie Portman’s Shaved Head (above) stopped into Minneapolis’ First Avenue with the likes of indie giants CSS, the Go!Team, and Matt & Kim.

With a line-up like this, there is no resisting the dancing bug. Check out photos from all of the acts below:

Unique State Representative Candidate Could Bring Fresh Perspective

This blog hasn’t touched on politics much, but there is a big problem in Michigan. The state continues its downward spiral with no end in sight due to petty politics in the state capital and backwards thinking minds in office. Drastic change is needed to help Michigan prosper, again. One candidate I have been especially impressed with is Tim Nendorf, a Democratic candidate for the State House of Representatives in the 62nd District. He is a law student at Michigan State University with a resume far beyond his years. I am excited by the idea of him making a change in Michigan. I followed Tim around a bit during his campaign this summer and you can check out a video I produced in support of him below:

HEALTH SAYS ‘NO TO SMOKING’

The guys of HEALTH had an issue with their recent show in Austin, TX when all kids 18 and under were turned away from their “All Ages” show due to an Aesop Rock show next door being sponsored by Camel.

HEALTH wrote a blog on their MYSPACE yesterday telling fans that were turned away to e-mail them their names. “EMO’S IS GONNA GIVE YOU 2 FREE ADMISSIONS TO OTHER SHOWS, AND THE NEXT HEALTH SHOW IS FREE. ALSO INCLUDE YR ADDRESS SO WE CAN GIVE YOU SOME STUFF. AND FU*K CIGARETTES,” the blog read.

This is a great move on the band’s part and shows independent musicians truly care about the people who support them.

Check out a track that has been one of my and fellow Above the Fold contributor Santos’ summer jams:

David Byrne//Brian Eno to Self-Release First Album in Decades

David Byrne and Brian Eno are back together again! The legendary duo is going to release an album titled Everything That Happens Will Happen Today at this web-site on August 18th. You can sign up to receive a free track from the new album on August 4th by joining their mailing list. This has potential to be one of the greatest albums in a long time.

In the past year Byrne has interviewed and written an article about Radiohead for Wired Magazine, collaborated with Fatboy Slim, has brought the musical dream team back together, and will then tour America playing new and old Byrne/Eno songs. I couldn’t be much more excited!

Check out one of my favorite tracks of all-time, Byrne performing Talking Heads song Psycho Killer for their magical live movie Stop Making Sense.

Baron Von Luxxury & Friends on LA’s Indie 103.1

LA DJ / Songwriter, Baron Von Luxxury, has certainly not held back on providing free killer remixes to the masses, and since the start of The Disco Workout, BVL and friends have kept a steady stream of 1’s and 0’s to satiate the blogosphere appetite. In true Luxxurious fashion, BVL along with a few other artists (the Black Ghosts & Ellei from Shadowscene) decided to sweat out a mix for DJ Paul V’s radio show: Neon Noise on Indie 103.1, and has made the mix available on The Disco Workout. This 2 part mix is a blend of all things disco/electro from the past year and then some.
