DC’s very own Go-Go rapper, WALE, has released a follow up mixtape to “100 Miles and Running”. Released by the clothing company 10 Deep of NYC, and again, mixed by Nick Catchdubs, the mixtape is a welcomed addition to this MC’s efforts to “bringin’ that Grammy back to DC”. Also available, in true 10 deep fashion, is a limited edition the Mixtape About Nothing “serenity now” t-shirt.

I’m sorry, what?
You want a summer club banger with Abba-by-way-of Madonna samples and Lil Jon yelling?
Yeah, Scottie B’s got you covered. Check out “London Wild.”
You want what else?
A “Push It” remix that doesn’t suck?
Sure, Scottie B’s got that for you. Check out his “Push It” re-fix.
Throwing down on his second release for the Money Studies label, bmore king Scottie B keeps it hype for six solid tracks. He’s ably assisted by two other bmore legends, Shawn Caesar and King Tutt, as members of the Chavy Boys, which just might be the first bmore supergroup. Even the weakest tracks on here—the somewhat repetitive “Rockin Music” and “Request Line”—are still hotter bmore club tracks than almost anyone else puts out. Hell, Scottie B probably makes better bmore in his sleep than most DJs can put out on their best day. Well recommended as your soundtrack for summer.
What? You’re still here? What else do you need?
A bmore-bhangra crossover?
Yes, Scottie B’s got that too. Check out “Ofra Bhangra.” Just go get the damn album already.

This is what I thought the Ivy League would sound like. The band is obviously aware of who they are: an easy-listening pop-rock group reminiscent of a hazy night in a house somewhere just off campus at, say, Yale. This is Ivy League maunders just enough from a mainstream sound to be appreciated by a slightly underground audience, but they flirt with it enough to keep things simple on your ear. Their songs are often carried by beautiful, and almost tropical, vocal harmonies, which are the true gem of this album. After the first five tracks, things begin to seem monotonous, with redundant instrumentation and mood. Starting with track six, however, they reveal another side to their personality with a more acoustic-based sound. The second half of the album compliments the first half wonderfully, and may even outshine it. It is a bit more atmospheric, and definitely more inventive.

Chances are if you know anything about current music you have heard of Kid Cudi. His debut track Day ‘N Night has sent him to another level. Now, with a spot on Fool’s Gold for his debut full-length in September, things are only looking up for this Midwest-born, New York based MC.
Check his web-site soon for a new mixtape that will likely be dropped before the end of the month called A Kid Named Cudi.
Kid Cudi took the time to sit down with Above the Fold last month. Check out the third installment of Above the Fold’s video pod series featuring Kid Cudi:

When I did the post about the connection between visual art and music (see: TokyoPlastic – An Ear for Visual Art), one of the other artists to pop into my mind was Mike Davis ( aka Mike the 2600 King): DJ, graphic designer, and accomplished screen printer; this St. Louis native came to the Twin Cities by way of a creative art collective known as Burlesque of North America. These design and screen printing pros have really made quite a splash with their screen printed concert posters displaying such talent as Diplo, Doomtree, Lyrics born, and many others.
While visual art is a career in itself for Mike, he puts a lot of his energy into music with DJing and remixing. You can often hear Mike spinning the freshest cuts in funk, soul, and hip-hop around town, on mixtapes, local radio, and on the Burlesque of North America Podcast. He has also lent both his talents to the debut 12″ music release from BONA Do It To It and was kind enough to take the time to answer some questions about that and more! So read on and make sure to check out Mike the 2600 King w/ Dave Nada, Bird Peterson, Star Eyes, Bitch Azz Darius, Jimmy 2 Times & Plain ole Bill, Soviet Panda, and the Moon Goons at the Minneapolis Do It To It 12″ release party at First Avenue Nightclub.
